Effective Abdominal Exercises for Women

The first one is called the abdominal bridge. Lie flat on your back with your arms fully stretched out over your head. Hold your abdominal muscles in as tight as you can. Then, raise your buttocks off the floor with control. Hold this position for a few seconds, keeping your belly tight. Slowly lower your buttocks then repeat the movement several times. Makes sure you do this exercise with control; and always keep your stomach tight against your ribcage.

The next one is referred to as the bicycle crunch. Keep your hands behind your head. Raise your shoulders and push your lower back towards the floor. Move your legs the way you would if you were riding a bicycle, but do the movements slowly and precisely. As your right knee comes close to your chest, try to touch it with your left elbow. In a similar manner, as you cycle and the left knee comes close to your upper body, try to touch it with the right elbow. Do several repetitions of this exercise.

The third exercise is called the plank. With your whole body turned towards the floor, push yourself up with your forearms supporting your upper body and the inner sides of your curled toes held tight against the ground to help support the body. Try to keep your body parallel to the ground, holding your buttocks, stomach, and arms, and upper legs tight, as you keep your body raised parallel to the floor. Hold this position for a few seconds, extending the time as you gain in strength.

Michael Geary, on the other hand, assumes that the people who are interested in his book already have the necessary background regarding nutrition and exercise so proceeds directly to teach us how to lose the abdominal fat surrounding the abdomen in order to give the abs its proper six pack definition. Comparing cardiovascular and weight lifting exercises, Geary clearly recommends the latter.
